The City of Salzburg
On Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s trail
The city of Salzburg - and especially its historic old town - is truly one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The city centre straddles the Salzach river and is framed by the Mönchsberg Mountain with the Hohensalzburg Fortress on the left bank of the river and the Kapuzinerberg Mountain on the right bank. The climb up this mountain in the city is worth the trip - here you can enjoy great views and take some lovely photos of the old town..
Old town of Salzburg
The old town itself is a true architectural treasure thanks to its many styles of architecture. Stroll through the city’s many narrow streets (the most famous of which are the Getreidegasse, Judengasse, Goldgasse, Kaigasse, Linzergasse and Steingasse) and find architecture from the Romantic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as the monarchy’s noble neo-classical town houses. There is hardly an era that hasn’t left its architectural mark on Salzburg.
Because Salzburg’s old town is both pedestrian-friendly and relatively small, there are plenty of things to see and do in Salzburg on foot - a walk from Nonntal in the south to the Mülln hill in the north takes about 20 minutes. The most famous Salzburg sightseeing highlights are the Residence Square and its synonymous fountain, the nearby Alter Markt marketplace, University Square and of course Mozart Square and the statue of this famous son of Salzburg.
Impressive Architecture in Salzburg
Salzburg has no lack of impressive architecture. Some of the most recognisable buildings in Salzburg are the Salzburg Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Residence, St Peter’s Abbey with its incredible cemetery, the Franciscan Church, University Church, and the buildings which make up the Festival District: the Grosses Festspielhaus, Haus für Mozart, and the Felsenreitschule. On the right side of the Salzach, be sure to check out the Mirabell Palace and its romantic gardens, a popular place for taking beautiful photos. Just outside the city is the Hellbrunn Palace and its famous trick fountains and zoo.
Another popular attraction is the impressive HANGAR-7 , an aeroplane and modern art museum as well as restaurant, cafe and bar all rolled into one.
Shopping in Salzburg
When you plan a shopping-tour in Salzburg, the oldtown of Salzburg fits perfectly. There are many small shops, in different price-categories, which invite you to a cozy stroll. If the weather is not so good, our two big shopping centres "Europark" and "Designer Outlet Salzburg" are a good option to go shopping. The shopping centre "Europark" is easily reached at the motorway exit "Kleßheim" at the A1. The "Designer Outlet Salzburg" is reached also at the West-Motorway (A1), Exit Airport.
If you prefer to go to the city centre by car, there are different billable parking garages, for example Raiffeisen-Garage or Oldtown-Garage. You can devaluate your parking ticket in a store or café, then you pay a smaller parking fee.
